Filmmaker and photographer Robin Mudge is using the latest high resolution digital cinema tools to produce ultra high definition (UHD), high dynamic range (HDR) moving still pictures ‘kinematographs’ for wall display on a new generation of thin, large format flat screen TVs. Robin’s pictures are of static scenes (both land and cityscapes), observed for a longish period of time. The scene remains the same, but small changes happen over the recorded period in the style of Uber Cinema Vérité!

Better than traditional prints!

Kinematographs are available in 4K UHD, HDR and traditional HD, standard dynamic range for display on existing flat screen TVs. Many of the displays cost less than mounting and framing equivalent sized traditional fine art prints, but have the advantage of being able to show many different pictures with much higher image quality than the finest of fine art prints. Because of this, traditional fine art photographs greatly benefit from display on 4K UHD, HDR TVs. Sets of pictures are provided as time-based slide shows and interactive galleries, whereby a viewer can choose which picture is to be displayed.

What is UHD?

A few years ago a new range of TV sets were introduced with the label 4K UHD. UHD provided a big jump in resolution at four times the resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels of HD TV to 2160 x 3840 pixels in UHD; that represented a significant improvement in picture quality. From the beginning of 2016, that picture quality has taking on an entirely new meaning. UHD TVs not only offer higher resolution, but also more and richer colors than ever before, and something called High Dynamic Range, or HDR.

HDR expands the number of steps in bright and dark levels in a 4K UHD TV and gives much brighter, more realistic whites and much deeper, richer darks. It also gives a wider, richer range of colors. With this, a TV picture takes on a more “dynamic” look and ultimately gives a far more realistic and true to life appearance. In fact, HDR TVs show higher dynamic range pictures, with a larger color range than the finest of fine art prints ever can!
